PLAA News: The Offseason Begins
Saturday, August 31st, 1963: The PLAA champions have been crowned, the last of the celebratory champagne sipped and now begins another offseason in baseball's cycle of life. For fans, the days drag by, with only news of hirings and firings breaking up the monotony. But for general managers, there's plenty of work to do. The offseason is when a top-notch GM really earns his money. It is their time to analyze the past season, to understand the strengths and weaknesses of their clubs and to make plans for the next season. Future champions will lay much of the groundwork for their success during the next few months.

5-9 Day for Hughes
Saturday, August 17th, 1963: Dennis Hughes had a huge game today at Mighty Moose Ballpark. He rapped 5 hits in 9 tries and helped the Tempe Knights overcome the Duluth Mighty Moose 7-2.

Dennis Hughes singled in the 1st, struck out in the 3rd, flied out in the 5th, hit an RBI single in the 6th, flied out in the 8th, struck out in the 10th, singled in the 13th, singled in the 15th and doubled in the 17th.

So far this season Hughes is batting .338 with 2 home runs, 64 RBIs and 76 runs scored. He has 156 hits in 461 at-bats, 29 walks and a .378 OBP. Hughes has played in 116 games.
PLAA News: Playoffs begin
Sunday, August 11th, 1963: Playoff baseball is a special time of year. General managers who have struggled all year to steer their club to the promised land love it as they make those final, pivotal roster selections going into the Division Championship Series. For them, this is an elusive, exciting, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to win the Pioneer League Pioneer Championship Series. The playoff docket begins with these games today:
